Confucius's real name was Kong Qiu. 'Master
Kong' was the respectful title used for him.
He was an exceptional educator. He is one
of the most influential thinkers in Chinese history.
He had over 3,000 students, 72 of whom were
particularly outstanding.
Confucius spent a great deal of time with
his students every day, helping them with their lessons. In his spare time, he
devoted much of it to contemplation and study.
Confucius had an only son named Kong Li.
One day, Confucius was standing in his hall
pondering a question when he suddenly saw Kong Li hurrying across the courtyard
in front of the hall. He called out to him and said,
'You've grown up. Have you finished reading
your primers and started memorising and understanding the poems in the Book of
Poetry?'
Kong Li answered Confucius with great
respect.
'I haven't begun studying the Book of
Poetry yet.'
Upon hearing this, Confucius patted him on
the shoulder and said kindly, "Then you should probably start studying it.
Once you have studied it, you will understand the art of speech and be able to
communicate effectively with others.'
Kong Li nodded to indicate that he understood
Confucius's instruction. That afternoon, he began studying the Book of Poetry.
A few months later, Confucius was standing
in his hall pondering a question when he suddenly saw Kong Li walking briskly
across the courtyard in front of the hall. Confucius called out to him, "I
see you've been making good progress studying the Book of Poetry recently. I'm
very happy that you're studying so diligently.
By the way, have you set aside some time to
study the etiquette in the Book of Rites?'
Kong Li replied respectfully, "I
haven't started studying the Book of Rites yet."
Hearing this, Confucius patted him on the
shoulder and said kindly, "Then you should start studying it." Once
you have finished studying it, you will know the proper etiquette for
interacting with others and you will become a well-mannered and respected
person."
Kong Li nodded to indicate that he had
understood. That afternoon, he began studying the Book of Rites.
This idiom translates literally as
'instruction heard while passing through a courtyard'.
It is used to describe a father's teachings
and instructions to his children.
