Confucius's name was Kong Qiu. 'Kong Fuzi' is the respectful title given to him.

He was an outstanding educator. He is one of the most influential thinkers in Chinese history.

He had over 3,000 students, 72 of whom were particularly outstanding. Stories about his disciples are recorded in historical books.

Each of Confucius's students had their own strengths: some had excellent character, some were eloquent, some were highly capable and some were suited to focused scholarly study.

One of these students, Duanmu Ci, possessed sharp eloquence and skillful speech. He was also adept at business and was the wealthiest of all of Confucius's students.

According to historical records, Duanmu Ci came from a family of merchants. He entered Confucius's school at around the age of 25 to study under him, by which time he was already a successful merchant.

Confucius was proficient in the six skills required of the nobility at the time: etiquette, music, archery, chariot driving, calligraphy and mathematics. Duanmu Ci therefore studied under him, hoping to elevate his social status through mastering these skills.

During his first year, Duanmu Ci looked down on Confucius, believing he had nothing to offer beyond these six skills.

In his second year, however, he began to realize that Confucius had much to teach him about character, morality and worldview. Nevertheless, he still maintained an attitude of equality towards Confucius.

From the third year onwards, as their relationship deepened, Duanmu Ci realized that Confucius's profound knowledge, refinement, and vision far surpassed his own. He became more humble and his respect for Confucius grew day by day from that time on. Confucius also became one of the most important mentors in Duanmu Ci's life. Whenever he had a question, he consulted Confucius.

One day, Duanmu Ci asked Confucius a question.

'Through my studies with you, I have come to believe that each of us, regardless of our current circumstances, should strive to be of good character.

The specific manifestations of this are as follows: when one is wealthy, one should not be arrogant towards the poor, and when one is poor, one should not fawn over the wealthy.

What do you think of my learning experiences?'

'My understanding is that...'

Confucius looked at Duanmu Ci approvingly, then smiled and answered.

'I think you have a good understanding, but regarding this question, I believe that when a person is wealthy, they should not be arrogant towards the poor. They should also maintain polite behaviour and speech.'

Likewise, when a person is poor, they should not fawn over the rich. They must also have a passion for pursuing truth.

I think this attitude is even better.

The first idiom translates directly as follows: When a person is wealthy, they should not be arrogant towards the poor. They must also maintain polite behaviour and speech.

The second idiom translates as follows: When a person is poor, they should not flatter the wealthy. They must also be passionate about pursuing the truth.

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts did you gain from this story?

If you suddenly became very rich, how would you behave and react? And if you suddenly became very poor?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.
