During the Spring and Autumn period in
ancient China, there was a king of the Kingdom of Qi named Jiang Chujiu.
History books tell a story about him.
He had several sons, and his favourite was
Jiang Tu. Jiang Tu had a nickname, An Ruzi, meaning 'quiet child'.
From birth, Jiang Tu was extremely favoured
by Jiang Chujiu. When Jiang Tu was about three years old, Jiang Chujiu often played
a game with him.
It was probably a game that many fathers
played with their children: Jiang Chujiu would crawl on the ground like a cow
and Jiang Tu would sit on his back. Sometimes, while crawling, Jiang Chujiu
would imitate a cow chewing a rope and Jiang Tu would pull on the 'rope',
leading Jiang Chujiu slowly along.
Every time they played, Jiang Tu would
laugh uncontrollably.
Despite being the king of a country, Jiang
Chujiu humbled himself to make Jiang Tu happy. While playing the cow, he forgot
his royal identity.
One day, while playing the game, Jiang
Chujiu broke a tooth. However, he was neither angry nor upset about it. The
next day, he happily crawled on the ground, pretending to be an ox for Jiang Tu
to ride.
In 490 BC, he fell seriously ill and felt
he was about to die. Before he died, he wrote a will ordering Jiang Tu to be
his heir to the throne.
However, after Jiang Chujiu's death, his
will was not carried out. Due to a power struggle within the royal family,
Jiang Tu did not become king of Qi. He was murdered, and the throne was passed
to another of Jiang Chujiu's sons.
According to ancient Chinese beliefs, there
is an underground world corresponding to the world of the living, where every
dead person lives.
Shortly after Jiang Chujiu's death, he and
his son Jiang Tu reunited there.
This idiom literally translates as 'he
pretended to be a cow with a child riding on his back'.
It is used to describe a doting father.

中國的春秋時代，齊王國有一個國王，他的名字叫做姜杵臼。歷史書上記載了一個他的故事。
他有好幾個兒子，他最喜歡的一個兒子的名字叫做姜荼，姜荼有一個小名，這個小名叫做(安孺子)，這個小名的意思是安靜的幼童的意思。
姜荼自從出生之後就受到姜杵臼的極度寵愛，在姜荼長到大約3歲的時候，姜杵臼就常常跟他玩一個遊戲。
這個遊戲可能很多的父親都跟自己的小孩玩過，那就是姜杵臼會用在地上當成一隻牛來爬行，然後姜荼坐在姜杵臼的背上，有時候姜杵臼爬行時口中還會學牛咬著一根繩子，姜荼就會牽著這跟繩子帶著姜杵臼慢慢行走。
每次玩這個遊戲的時候，姜荼就會笑到停不下來
姜杵臼雖然身為一個國家的國王，但是他為了讓姜荼開心，所以他放下自己的身段。他在當牛的那一刻，他忘記了自己是一個國王的身分。
有一天，他們父子在玩這個遊戲的時候發生了意外，姜杵臼還摔斷了一顆牙齒，但是姜杵臼沒有因為自己的牙齒摔斷而生氣或著不開心，他在發生意外的隔天仍舊開心地爬在地上當成牛來讓姜荼騎著到處爬行。
西元前490年，生了一場重病，他覺得自己要死了，他在死前立下遺囑，他下令要讓姜荼成為他的王位的繼承人。
姜杵臼死後，他的遺囑沒有得到實行，由於皇室內的權力鬥爭的結果，姜荼沒有當上齊王國的國王，姜荼被謀殺，齊王國的國王由姜杵臼的另外一個兒子繼位。
根據古代的中國人的看法，有一個對應於我們活人的世界的地方，每個死去的人都會生活在這個地下的世界，這個世界稱為陰間。
姜杵臼與姜荼這對父子，在姜杵臼死後的不久，他們兩個人就在陰間相聚了。
那這句成語直接翻譯的意思是他假裝自己是牛被一個幼童騎在自己身上。
這句成語被用來形容一個父親十分寵愛自己的小孩。
