there was a famous general named Sun Mian whose story is recorded in historical
books.
He was physically strong, highly capable
and extremely loyal to his country.
However, he was also arrogant, morally
corrupt, fond of drinking and promiscuous. He even used his power to force
married women to sleep with him.
Upon hearing of these actions, the emperor
of the Northern Song Dynasty was furious and dismissed him from his post,
severely punishing him.
The Northern Song dynasty had a tradition
of valuing civil servants while devaluing military officers. This contributed
to the decline of the Northern Song Dynasty's power, leaving it frequently
harassed and attacked by nomadic tribes from the north.
In his seventies, Sun Mian returned to the
central government and was appointed general in charge of border defence following
an event that led to this outcome.
A famous minister named Ouyang Xiu told the
emperor:
'We have recently been subjected to
constant incursions by the Western Xia Kingdom. We must strengthen our border
defences and appoint an experienced general to lead the troops stationed on the
border in defence against the Western Xia.
After much deliberation, I have identified
a very suitable candidate: Sun Mian.'
Although he is over 70 years old, he can
still ride a fast horse and hunt with an eagle, and his health is excellent.
He is skilled at training soldiers and is
very familiar with border affairs. While our country has many talented
individuals, few are well-suited to long-term border defence and leading
troops. I believe Sun Mian is the most suitable candidate.
Sun Mian was previously dismissed from his
post due to his personal flaws. However, he is extremely loyal to the Northern
Song dynasty. We should give him another chance to serve the dynasty and prove
himself. If he is given the opportunity to become a general again, I believe he
will do his utmost.
Sun Mian was reinstated due to Ouyang Xiu's
recommendation.
A year later, he died of illness on the
border of the Northern Song Dynasty.
The idiom literally translates as 'He rode
a fast horse and carried an eagle.'
It is used to describe someone going

孫沔的個人品德不好，所以他之前被免除職務，但是他對北宋王朝很忠誠，我們應該再給他一個機會，讓他有機會為北宋王朝盡力，讓他有機會展現出他的能力，我相信，他如果有機會再次成為將軍，他一定會盡全力表現。
孫沔因為歐陽修的推薦，所以再次復出。
一年後，孫沔因病死在北宋王朝的邊境區域。
