During the Tang dynasty in China, there was
a famous writer named Liu Zongyuan. He wrote a story in which he depicted some
of the social conditions he had observed.
The first half of the story is as follows:
'Because I was demoted, I was assigned to
Yongzhou as a minor official with a low salary and no real power. Yongzhou was
a primitive and desolate place with many undeveloped areas.
There was a special and very rare venomous
snake in Yongzhou. This snake had a black body with white markings.
Its venom was extremely potent, but the
snake itself was also a very special traditional Chinese medicine. Dried snake
bodies could treat many rare and difficult-to-cure diseases, making them very
valuable.
Due to the snake's high therapeutic
efficacy, the central government decreed that anyone who caught a venomous
snake could hand it over to the government and have half of their annual tax
liability deducted. If someone caught two venomous snakes in a year and handed
them in, they wouldn't have to pay any taxes that year.
Due to this regulation, many people in
Yongzhou specialise in catching these snakes, making it their profession.
After I arrived in the area, I met a
middle-aged man named Jiang. Both his grandfather and father were venomous
snake catchers.
He told me that both his grandfather and
father had died from snakebites while catching snakes.
'I've been doing this dangerous work for 12
years. Several times, I've almost died from snakebites.'
The man's face showed sadness as he spoke.
Noticing his change in expression, I said
to him,
'If you think this work is too dangerous,
you can choose to change jobs.
You could become a farmer like others, or
learn a specialised skill. You can start making different choices today.'
After hearing my words, the middle-aged man
fell silent for several minutes.

A few minutes later, when he had calmed
down somewhat, he said to me,
'This is my best choice, even though the
job is very dangerous.'
I looked at the middle-aged man, puzzled. I
didn't understand why he had answered me this way. The man paused, then began
to tell me his family story.

因為這項規定，所以永州這個地方有很多人專門捕捉這種毒蛇，這些人將捕捉毒蛇當作自己的職業。
我到了這個地方之後，我認識了一個姓蔣的中年男子，這個中年男子的祖父與父親都是從事捕捉毒蛇的這種職業。
這個中年男子的祖父與父親都是因為在捕捉毒蛇的過程中被毒蛇咬傷而喪生，這個中年男子對我說。
我已經從事這個危險的工作長達12年了，有好幾次，我都因為被毒蛇咬傷而差點死掉。
這個中年男子說這些話的時候，他的臉上有著悲傷的表情。
