Like meteors and lightning: fleeting and
Chinese Taoism believes in a special
connection between the human body and the universe. Through specific Taoist
practices, some people can undergo unique transformations of their body and
mind.
If they succeed, they can achieve
immortality.
Li Bai, a renowned Tang Dynasty poet from
China, embraced these Taoist concepts. Later generations considered his poems
to be those of someone who had achieved immortality, possessing a philosophical
realm beyond our own.
Tu Long, a playwright from the Ming
dynasty, wrote a play about Li Bai's life. One poem from the play reads as
follows:
'The brilliance, glory, wealth and power we
experience in life are like meteors and lightning: fleeting and swift, usually
vanishing in a very short time.'
The things we find beautiful often slip
away as quickly as an arrow shot from a bow or a ball rolling down a hill;
before we've even felt satisfied, they're gone.
I realised the brevity of life and wanted
to become immortal. So I left home to search far and wide for the abode of the
immortals.
In my imagination, this place would have a
green bamboo forest and a clear spring. There, I could hear the wind rustling
through the pine trees and be surrounded by a mysterious mist.
Looking up, I could see dragons and
phoenixes soaring in the clouds, and looking down, white cranes moving slowly
across the fields.
It would be wonderful to become immortal! I
could drift on the vast ocean in my leisure time and visit the magnificent
houses where the immortals resided when I felt like resting.
This idiom literally translates as 'as fast
as a shooting star or lightning'.
It is used to describe extreme speed.

(Like meteors and lightning: fleeting
and swift.)
