Yan Ying was an outstanding statesman of the Qi Kingdom during China's Spring and Autumn period. He was short in stature and of ordinary appearance, but possessed great wisdom.

History records a story about him.

He lived from approximately 578 to 500 BC and served as an important minister in the central government of the Qi Kingdom for over 50 years, assisting three kings of Qi.

Yan Ying was intelligent and extremely upright. When he saw that the king's decisions or ideas were flawed, he would skilfully remind the king of this, thus earning the king's trust and respect.

At that time, there was another minister in the Qi Kingdom named Liang Qiu Ju. Liang Qiu Ju was very loyal to the king and was therefore favoured by him.

One day, while chatting with Yan Ying, Liang Qiu Ju said:

'You are so wise. You have helped the king to make our Qi Kingdom powerful. I respect and admire you greatly.' I've always hoped to achieve what you have, so I've set you as an example and am constantly learning from you.

Recently, however, I've realised that while I'm improving every day, so are you. It seems I'll never reach your level in this lifetime.

Yan Ying smiled and replied to Liang Qiu Ju.

'I've heard an ancient proverb full of wisdom:

'Those who persevere often succeed, and those who keep moving forward often reach their destination.'

I'm not smarter than you; I'm just an ordinary human being like you. But I believe that, as long as I'm willing and can persevere and keep moving forward, there's nothing I can't achieve in life. This is my belief."

I believe that if you keep moving forward, you will definitely achieve the same things that I have.

This proverb translates as follows: Those who persevere often succeed, and those who keep moving forward often reach their destination.

Dear friend, what have you learnt from this story, and what inspiration have you gained?

Who is your role model in life? Do you have a long-term goal to work towards?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.

(Those who persist in action often succeed; those who keep moving forward often reach their destination.)
