Developing one's own unique style or system(自成一家)
In the Song dynasty of China, there was a
famous poet and calligrapher named Huang Tingjian. History books tell his
story.
He had a close friend named Qiu Shisi who
was of noble character and also a skilled calligrapher. The two were very
close.
In the Jin dynasty, there was a
calligrapher named Wang Xizhi who is considered by many to be the greatest
calligrapher in Chinese history.
Huang Tingjian once wrote a poem for Qiu
Shisi, the gist of which is as follows:
'My good friend Qiu Shisi gives me the
feeling of a bright spring day with a gentle breeze, warm sunshine and lush
blooms.
My good friend Qiu Shisi has eyes as bright
as an autumn falcon's and teeth as white as jade and ice. He has a study full
of books, and he likes to sit by the clear window and read.
After carefully preparing for his
calligraphy practice before my eyes, he picked up a brush and began writing.
His calligraphy was incredibly powerful, and I was amazed by his work.
I love Chinese calligraphy. I have
collected many works by ancient Chinese masters and given several to Qiu Shisi.
He can display these pieces on his table or hang them on a screen to admire
them.
I have my own unique insights and
evaluations regarding those ancient Chinese calligraphy masters and their
works. Having seen so many works, I have come to a realisation:
If someone only imitates the works of
famous calligraphers, they will never become a true master. It is only by
developing their own unique style or system that one can truly be considered a
master.
My good friend Qiu Shisi has a daughter
named Aqian. She is very spirited and energetic, and her eyes and eyebrows
resemble her father's.
If Qiu Shisi were to share the works I gave
him with his daughter and encourage her to copy them, I believe she would stand
a good chance of becoming a calligrapher who leaves her mark on Chinese
history, just like her father.
This idiom means to develop a unique style
or system of one's own.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts
did you gain from this story?
Do you have any close friends who share
your interests? What gifts have you received that you consider the most
precious?
I hope this story helps you gain some new
insights.o
(Developing one's own unique style or
system)
