Ignorant ordinary people(愚夫愚婦)
During the Southern Song dynasty in China,
there was a famous thinker and philosopher named Lu Jiuyuan.
He believed that the most fundamental
natural laws governing the universe reside within each of our hearts. We should
all learn to observe and cultivate our own hearts, and we all have the
opportunity to perceive and cultivate the conscience and goodness within us.
He once told his students:
'The essence of each of us is good; we are
born with the capacity to do good.'
A person's ears naturally hear and their
eyes naturally see; a person naturally knows how to show filial piety towards
their parents and respect towards their elder brothers.
We are all inherently perfect; our hearts
are without deficiency. Therefore, as long as we understand and feel this, we
will not seek to compensate for any perceived lack through external material
means.
In one of his books, he wrote the
following:
'The difference between a human and a beast
lies in the presence of kindness within us.' Many people today have abandoned
their inner kindness and are living like beasts.
A person of high moral character and noble
aspirations will constantly remind themselves to maintain their inner kindness.
If such a person finds their kindness weakening, they will feel fear.
We cannot deceive the gods, ghosts or
unseen forces of nature, nor can we bully ordinary, ignorant people. We must
constantly examine whether the goodness within us still exists, and cultivate
it to make it stronger.
This idiom translates as 'ignorant ordinary
men and women'.
It is used to describe a group of ordinary,
ignorant people.

(Ignorant ordinary people)
