Throughout China's long history, there have
been several notable father-son duos. Cao Cao, Cao Pi and Cao Zhi are among the
most notable.
All three were highly accomplished in
literature. Cao Cao was a brilliant leader and commander. Cao Pi continued his
father's legacy and established the Cao Wei Kingdom. Cao Zhi's wisdom was
considered the greatest of his time. Their friends were among the most famous
and outstanding figures of their era.
Cao Pi had a good friend named Wu Zhi. Cao
Pi once wrote a letter to Wu Zhi, the gist of which is as follows:
'My good friend Wu Zhi, it's been a long
time since we last saw each other. I miss you very much and I'm wondering how
you've been lately.
I miss you very much. I often think about
the days we lived together in Nanpi a few years ago. Those happy times remain
in my heart, and I think about them from time to time.'
It's May again, summertime. A warm breeze
blows across the vast land and the fruit trees are laden with ripe fruit.
A few days ago, I went on a horse-drawn
carriage trip with some friends. Our carriage traveled slowly northwards along
the Yellow River.
I sat in the carriage and watched the
vibrant scenery outside the window. I could hear the sounds of northern
instruments being played by servants at the front of the carriage. I was alone
in my carriage; my friends, who also love literature, were in the carriage
behind.
Although it's summer again and the music
and itinerary are the same, my feelings are completely different from a few
years ago.
The things are the same, but the people are
not. I feel sad and melancholy because I haven't seen you in such a long time.
I am sending a messenger to a city near you
today, so I have written this letter to you. I have instructed the messenger to
deliver it to you. As I write this, I hope you are taking good care of
yourself, and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
This idiom literally means "The things
are the same, but the people are not."

今天我剛好要派遣一個使者到你附近的一座城市中，我寫了這封信給你，我吩咐那個使者幫我把我寫的這封信送過去給你，我的信寫到這邊，我希望你多保重自己的身體，我期待我們兩個人可以早日相見。
