To kill and defeat the enemy, thus achieving victory in war(殺敵致果)

The period from 770 to 476 BC was known as the Spring and Autumn Period in China. This was followed by the Warring States Period, from 476 to 221 BC.

During this time, China's highest leader was the king of the Zhou dynasty. The Zhou king established more than 100 vassal states, each of which became a kingdom in its own right. These kingdoms engaged in many fierce wars for land and resources, creating an extremely chaotic era.

In 607 BC, the Kingdom of Zheng sent an army to attack the Kingdom of Song. The Kingdom of Song dispatched a military strategist named Kuang Jiao to help a general named Hua Yuan lead the army in defence.

Kuang Jiao was a brave and honourable military strategist. After the battle began, the Song army quickly gained the upper hand and the Zheng army retreated. Kuang Jiao led his soldiers in pursuit.

As he pursued the soldiers of the Zheng Kingdom, he passed a dried-up well. The wailing of a man could be heard from within. He stopped and stood at the well's edge, asking, "Is anyone in the well?"

'Is anyone in the well? Who are you?"

The man in the well answered weakly:

'I am an officer of the Zheng Kingdom. I fell into this well by accident during the retreat. Can you save me? If you don't, I will surely die here."

After thinking for a few minutes, Kuangjiao extended a long weapon into the well and said to the man, "

'Grab my weapon and I'll pull you up.'

After climbing out of the well, the Zheng Kingdom officer sat weakly by its edge. As Kuang Jiao bent down to check the officer's injuries, the officer suddenly pulled a short knife from his clothes and held it to Kuang Jiao's throat. This unexpected turn of events took Kuang Jiao completely by surprise, and he became the officer's prisoner.

The historian who wrote this story added his reflections to the tale.

The historian said:

'When a soldier is carrying out a military operation, he should bravely accept the order and do his utmost to complete it.'

A soldier's most important quality is to consider killing and defeating the enemy and achieving victory as his primary goal.

Kuang Jiao was a negligent military advisor who forgot this goal, leading to his own and the Song Kingdom's defeat.

The idiom literally translates as "to kill and defeat the enemy, thus achieving victory in war".

(To kill and defeat the enemy, thus achieving victory in war)
