Various demons and monsters.(魑魅魍魎)
China has a very long history. The Xia
Dynasty, for example, existed from around 2070 BC to around 1600 BC. Its
founder was named Yu.
After establishing the Xia Dynasty, he
governed it diligently. He did not drink alcohol, welcomed constructive
suggestions and adopted the opinions of the people.
He is remembered and praised by later
generations of Chinese people for his excellent character and conduct. He was a
revered leader to later Chinese kings.
When he unified China, many of the tribal
leaders in his territory presented him with special products to show their
respect and submission. They sent envoys to inform Yu of their ancient
traditions, customs and legends. He then instructed officials to illustrate and
document these stories.
He later divided the territory of the Xia
dynasty into nine provinces. Using precious and rare bronze artefacts collected
from various tribes, he created nine bronze tripods. He ordered craftsmen to
carve the unique local products, crops, deities, demons and monsters of each
province onto these bronze tripods.
Once completed, Yu used the nine bronze
tripods to worship his ancestors, Heaven and Earth. The bronze tripods were therefore
considered sacred objects that brought happiness to the people and protected
their lives and property.
The Xia dynasty collapsed 470 years after
Yu established it.
It was replaced by the Shang Dynasty, which
was founded by Tang. The Shang dynasty lasted 600 years before collapsing and
being replaced by the Zhou dynasty, which was founded by Ji Fa. The Zhou
dynasty lasted for nearly 800 years.
The Chinese believe that heaven blesses
those of high moral character and compassion. They liken a dynasty to a person:
if its leader consistently maintains high moral standards and cares for the
people, the dynasty will remain powerful.
If a dynasty's leader loses their moral
integrity and treats the people cruelly and maliciously, Heaven will destroy
the dynasty and allow a new one, established by a leader with high moral
standards and compassion, to replace it.
From the moment they were cast, these nine
bronze tripods represented Yu's virtue and care for the people. Consequently,
the people considered these nine bronze tripods to symbolise the legitimacy,
authority and absolute power of the regime ruling China.
The idiom literally translates to
"various demons and monsters."
It is used to describe all kinds of bad
people or evil forces.

(Various demons and monsters.)
