by his grandfather, he joined the army and became an officer.
He was a very disciplined and morally
upright man. He was extremely devoted to his mother, loyal to his friends, and
incorruptible. He believed that justice and morality were more important than
money. He held ethics in high regard, treating his elders with respect and his
juniors with courtesy. He was very humble.
He loved his country deeply and was willing
to sacrifice his life for it. He was incredibly brave and disregarded the risk
of injury.
He longed to emulate his grandfather's
great battlefield achievements, and he indeed possessed the talent to do so. He
successfully completed several difficult missions, earning the increasing trust
of the King of the Western Han Dynasty and his soldiers.
In 99 BC, the king ordered a general named
Li Guangli to lead an army and attack the Xiongnu kingdom. Li Ling was assigned
the responsibility of transporting and supplying weapons and provisions for
this mission.
Upon receiving the order, Li Ling said to
the king, "
'I am happy to participate in this mission,
but I hope to fight on the front lines. I do not want to be relegated to the
rear, responsible for supply and support.'
The king replied to the young Li Ling:
'I admire your courage and ambition, but
our army currently has a limited number of soldiers. We must maintain the
strength of our main force, and I cannot spare any more soldiers for you.'
Li Ling replied to the king. 'I have a
thorough understanding of the strengths of the armies of both the Han Dynasty
and the Xiongnu Kingdom. All you need to do is send me five thousand soldiers
as the vanguard and I guarantee that I can defeat the Xiongnu army and secure
victory.'
Impressed by Li Ling's confidence, the king
later granted his request.

我很讚賞你有這樣的勇氣與想法，但我們目前的軍隊的士兵的數量有限，我們必須要保持主力軍隊的優勢，我無法抽調更多的士兵給你。
李陵對國王說。
我對漢王朝的軍隊與匈奴王國的軍隊實力都非常的了解，你只需要調派五千個士兵給我讓我作為前鋒部隊，我保證可以打敗匈奴王國的軍隊並取得勝利。
國王看到那麼有信心的李陵，他後來答應了李陵的請求。
