Sima Qian, China's most outstanding
historian, wrote one of the country's most classic books: Records of the Grand
Historian (Shiji).
Previously, history had primarily recorded
the lives of prominent figures from the upper echelons of society, usually
kings or nobles.
However, when writing his historical work,
Sima Qian added several chapters to record the biographies of ordinary people
whose conduct was morally upright and just, whose personalities were simple and
humble, and whose behaviour differed from the norm. Yu Rang was one of them.
He was a unique and admirable man who lived
during the chaotic Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.
He was a man of great ability and virtue.
He was not valued in his youth, until he met Xun Yao — a nobleman and a very
important minister from the Jin Kingdom.
Xun Yao held Yu Rang in high regard and
involved him in many important decisions; they were very close.
In 453 BC, a severe political struggle
erupted within the Jin Kingdom. During this conflict, three ministers from the
Zhao, Wei and Han families joined forces to attack Xun Yao. Xun Yao and his
family were killed, and his family's power was destroyed completely.
Following Xun Yao's death, one of the three
ministers who had attacked him, Zhao by surname, desecrated Xun Yao's corpse in
an extremely vicious manner. Zhao's actions enraged Yu Rang.
He thought to himself, 'A person of noble
character will sacrifice their life for those who appreciate and respect them;
a woman will adorn herself for the men she loves.'
Xun Yao respected and valued me greatly in
life. Now that he is dead, I must avenge him.'
In order to avenge Xun Yao, Yu Rang went to
great lengths, even harming himself by swallowing charcoal to render himself
mute. Ultimately, however, Yu Rang failed; his assassination attempt was
discovered by a minister named Zhao, and he was arrested and executed.
Although he died, news of his loyalty and
courage spread far and wide. Upon hearing this story, Sima Qian included it in
his historical record, Records of the Grand Historian.
The idiom means that a person of noble
character will sacrifice their life for those who appreciate and respect them.
It is used to describe someone who is
willing to sacrifice their life for someone who appreciates and respects them.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts
did you gain from this story?
Have you heard of any ordinary people who

I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
(A person of noble character will
sacrifice their life for those who appreciate and respect them.)
