During the Spring and Autumn period in
ancient China, there was a famous prime minister of the Chu kingdom named Sun
Shu'ao. History books tell a story about him.
When Sun Shu'ao was a young child, he went
out to play one day.
Suddenly, he saw a snake on the road. This
snake was very unusual; it had two heads. He picked up a stick and hit the
snake. After killing it, he dug a hole and buried it.
Having done this, Sun Shu'ao turned and
went home. When he saw his mother, he ran to her and hugged her tightly. He
cried and said to her,
'Mum, I'm going to die. I don't want to
die. I want to be with you.'
Sun Shu'ao's mother was taken aback by his
words. She asked him,
'Why do you say you're going to die? What
happened when you went out to play?'
Sun Shu'ao replied... 'When I went out, I
saw a two-headed snake. I heard that anyone who sees a two-headed snake will
die very soon. I was terrified, so I grabbed a stick and killed it.
Afterwards, I was worried that passers-by
might see the corpse and also die soon after seeing it. So I dug a hole and
buried the snake.
After hearing this story, Sun Shu'ao's
mother smiled and hugged him, saying:
'You are a brave and loving child. I've
heard that heaven takes care of loving people who are considerate of others. I
think Heaven will bless you, and you won't die.'
In later Chinese generations, the term
'two-headed snake' evolved to symbolise someone extremely vicious and wicked. A
Yuan Dynasty song contained these lyrics:
'His heart is as vicious as a two-headed
snake; his heart is as fierce as a two-tailed scorpion.'
Because of his torment, I'm in a very bad
mood. I'm restless and can't calm down. When will I be able to escape this
situation?
This idiom translates literally as 'a snake
with two heads'.

孫叔敖突然看到路上有一條蛇，這條蛇非常的特殊，這條蛇有兩個蛇頭，孫叔敖就撿起路邊的木棍去打那條蛇，他打死那條蛇之後，他挖了一個洞把那條蛇埋在土中。
孫叔敖做完這件事後，他就轉頭回家，當他回家看到自己的母親時，他奔向前去緊緊地擁抱著自己的母親，他哭著對他的母親說。
媽媽，我即將要死了，我不想死，我想要在跟你在一起。
孫叔敖的媽媽聽到孫叔敖的話後嚇了一跳，她問孫叔敖說。
你為何說你即將會死呢?你出門去玩的時候發生了什麼事呢?
孫叔敖回答。
我外出的時候，看到一條兩頭蛇，我聽說看到兩頭蛇的人都會在很短的時間內去世，我那個時候很驚慌，我就拿一根木棍打死了那條蛇。
我打死那條蛇之後，我很擔心有路人看到那條蛇的屍體，我害怕有別人因為看到這條兩頭蛇也在短時間內身亡，所以我挖了一個洞把那條蛇埋在土裡。
孫叔敖的媽媽聽完他的話後微笑著抱著孫叔敖說。
你是一個勇敢又有愛心的孩子，我聽說，上天會照顧一個有愛心的人，一個肯替別人著想的人，我想上天會賜服給你所以你不會死。
兩頭蛇這個名詞在中國的後代演變成為形容一個人非常惡毒非常壞的象徵，在元王朝的一首歌曲中，有過這樣的幾句歌詞。
