A very earnest and diligent attitude(懃懃懇懇)
He was China's most outstanding historian.
He and his father both served as officials in the central government,
responsible for recording history. While this position was not particularly
high-ranking or well-paid, it was highly respected.
Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian
is China's most classic historical work. In his youth, he travelled throughout
China conducting detailed fieldwork. In middle age, based on the materials he
had collected, he began to compile Chinese history from 2700 BC to 100 BC.
In 99 BC, an event occurred that profoundly
impacted Sima Qian's life. He angered the king and was sentenced to castration,
a punishment that severely damaged his male dignity.
In a letter to a close friend named Ren An,
he wrote about the impact of this punishment.
'Not long ago, you wrote to me, instructing
me to treat those around me with caution and to consider recommending and
introducing virtuous and capable people as my duty.'
Your letter shows a very earnest and
diligent attitude, but I sense an underlying reproach that I have not heeded
your teachings. You believe that I have recently been misled by vulgar people.
To clarify this misunderstanding, I am
writing to you.
I am foolish and slow-witted, but I aspire
to be a person of high moral character who positively influences those around
me.
Recently, however, I suffered a humiliating
punishment that harmed my body and severely damaged my spirit. I have become
timid and cowardly, afraid that any action I take will cause me harm.
Consequently, I have become very reserved, and there are many things I dare not
do.
During this time, I have felt depressed and
sorrowful, and I have had no one to confide in.
This idiom translates as "a very
earnest and diligent attitude".
It can also be used to describe someone who
works diligently and conscientiously.
Dear friend,What inspiration or insights
have you gained from this story?
Have you ever experienced physical or
emotional harm? When you're feeling down, is there someone you can talk to?
I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
(A very earnest and diligent attitude)
