there was a famous writer named Feng Menglong. He devoted his life to
collecting and editing the popular literature of his era, including novels,
plays, folk songs and jokes. He also wrote several collections of short
stories.
In one of these, he quoted a poem by a
Taoist priest named Xu Shenweng from the Song dynasty. The poem's general
meaning is as follows:
'You no longer need to read Buddhist
scriptures diligently every day, nor do you need to recite mantras to avert
disasters.
The essence of Buddhist scriptures and
mantras is to awaken a person's compassion. You cannot erase the bad deeds and
sins you have committed by reading scriptures and reciting mantras.'
'If a person plants hemp seeds, they will
reap hemp; if a person plants bean seeds, they will reap beans. This is an
unchanging truth.' Everything in this world follows the law of cause and effect
— a perfectly fair and impartial law. Ultimately, we must each bear the
consequences of our own actions.
This idiom literally means "If you
plant bean seeds, you will get beans".
