The shadows of sparse branches and a faint,
refreshing fragrance.(疏影暗香)
During the Northern Song dynasty in China,
a famous poet and calligrapher named Lin Bu lived in seclusion near West Lake
in present-day Hangzhou. He wrote a poem about plum blossoms which some later
scholars consider to be the best poem in Chinese history. The poem's general
meaning is as follows:
When all the other flowers have withered in
this season, only the warm and beautiful plum blossoms bloom, filling this
small garden with their captivating charm.
In the clear, shallow pond, the shadows of
the sparse plum tree branches are reflected on the surface. The faint,
refreshing fragrance of the plum blossoms drifts gently on the breeze under the
hazy moonlight.
A bird with snow-covered wings seems to
want to fly to a branch of the plum tree to rest. Afraid of disturbing the plum
blossoms, the bird secretly observes where it will perch.
If summer butterflies could appear at this
time of year, I think they would also be captivated and ecstatic at the sight
of these plum blossoms.
When vulgar people appreciate plum
blossoms, they always like to sing, dance and drink, which makes the act
incredibly vulgar.
Fortunately, I am able to sit here alone,
reciting some of my favourite poems, close to my beloved plum blossoms.
This idiom translates literally as 'the
shadows of sparse branches and a faint, refreshing fragrance'.
It is used specifically to refer to plum
blossoms.
Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts

疏影暗香(The shadows of sparse branches and a
faint, refreshing fragrance.)
