(I believe they are true and reliable, and supported by evidence.)

I believe they are true and reliable, and supported by evidence.(信而有征)

This blog was originally created to introduce Chinese culture to an international audience. For the sake of simplicity and ease of understanding, traditional titles such as 'Emperor' and 'King' have been simplified to 'King', and the names of the individuals in question are used directly wherever possible. This is for the sake of translation convenience, not historical accuracy. If you wish to consult more rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of the article.

Following the end of the Jin dynasty in China, the country entered a long period of chaos known to historians as the Northern and Southern dynasties period.

Buddhism was introduced to China in 67 AD and, after nearly 400 years of development, reached its peak during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period.

Due to the highly turbulent political and economic situation during this period, characterised by frequent wars and rapid regime change, people felt the fragility of life and the impermanence of existence. Consequently, Buddhism spread rapidly and became an integral part of people's lives during this period. From that time onwards, Buddhism, alongside Confucianism and Taoism, became one of the three main influences on Chinese thought and values.

During this period, there was a famous minister and writer named Yan Zhitui. A devout Buddhist, he had a profound understanding of Buddhist doctrines.

He wrote a book in which he shared his life experiences with his children. This book was widely read and disseminated, and many of its ideas continue to influence Chinese people to this day.

In the book, he wrote the following:

'I believe in the Buddhist concepts of reincarnation and karma. I believe they are true and reliable, and supported by evidence.

Our family has been Buddhist for generations, and it is important that you pass this faith on to your descendants.

The core ideas of Buddhism are subtle and profound. They can be understood through Buddhist scriptures and the works of Buddhist masters, so I will not elaborate on them here.

I have written these words to strengthen your faith in Buddhism and encourage and guide you, so I will share some of my views on the religion.

In Buddhism, the material world, or the sensory realm, is categorised into four basic elements: earth, water, fire and wind. According to this belief, our bodies influence our psychology through five subjective experiences: colour, feeling, thought, behaviour and consciousness. Based on this theory, Buddhism guides each individual towards enlightenment using various methods.

I believe the theoretical foundation of Buddhism is very solid. Its wisdom and scope far surpass those of traditional Chinese Confucianism and other schools of thought.

However, after conducting some research, I discovered that these two seemingly vastly different theories, Buddhism and Confucianism, share the same fundamental origin. It is their different developmental environments that ultimately led to their two distinct forms.

This idiom literally translates as" I believe they are true and reliable, and supported by evidence. "

It is currently used to describe a statement or event as truthful and reliable, supported by tangible evidence.

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts did you gain from this story?

Do you have any beliefs? Have you ever seriously considered whether your beliefs are supported by concrete evidence?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.
