(One who believes themselves to be a
master and whose views are always correct.)

One who believes themselves to be a master
and whose views are always correct.(師心自任)
This blog was originally intended as an
introduction to Chinese culture for international friends. For the sake of
simplicity and ease of understanding, traditional titles such as 'emperor' and
'king' have been simplified to 'king', and the names of the individuals in
question are used directly wherever possible. This is for the sake of
translation convenience, not historical accuracy. If you wish to consult more
rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of
the article.
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties
period in China, there was a famous minister and writer named Yan Zhitui.
He wrote a book in which he shared his life
experiences with his children. This book was widely read and circulated, and
many of its ideas still influence Chinese people today.
He wrote the following passage in this
book:
'After studying, we often express our inner
feelings through writing. After writing these articles, we should first show
them to our family members and ask for their honest feedback. We should ask
them to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of our writing.'
Some people have the misconception that
they are masters and that their views are always correct. Therefore, they
refuse to listen to others. They don't realise that this behaviour will lead to
ridicule. We should avoid becoming like this.
Our articles are only published once they
have been evaluated impartially and objectively by our family members and
everyone agrees that they are suitable for public release.
Throughout China's long history, many
writers and scholars have produced countless articles. However, I believe that
only a few of these are truly insightful and worthy of careful reading.
In general, I believe that if an article's
structure conforms to the basic format, the wording is appropriate and the
author's meaning is conveyed clearly, then the author is quite talented.
If an article could cause a frenzy, winning
universal praise, then I believe the probability of this happening is extremely
small.
If you can maintain this clear
understanding of the basics, you will naturally neither feel inferior nor
become arrogant.
The idiom literally translates as 'one who
believes themselves to be a master and whose views are always correct'.
It is used to describe someone who has a
high opinion of themselves, believes their ideas are always right and refuses
to accept objective opinions from others.
Dear friend, what insights or thoughts did
you gain from this story?
Are you willing to accept the opinions of
others? Do you have a fair and objective view of yourself?
I hope this story gives you some new
insights.
