In the Eastern Han Dynasty of China, there
was a famous general called Geng Yan.
There is a story about him recorded in the
history books.
After the fall of the New Dynasty of China
in 23 AD, warlords across China relied on their own military might to carve out
their own spheres of influence.
The founder of the Eastern Han Dynasty was
named (Liu Xiu), and Liu Xiu was one of the many warlords of the time.
These warlords had many wars with each
other, and these warlords all wanted to defeat the other warlords and unite all
of China.
In 29 AD, at Geng Yan's request, Liu Xiu
asked Geng Yan to lead the army to attack a powerful warlord in what is now
Shandong Province. This warlord's name was Zhang Bu.
After Geng Yan won the war, Liu Xiu said to
him at the celebration banquet
Two years ago, you made a request to me,
saying that you would lead an army to attack Zhang Bu.
But I didn't think our strength was strong
enough at that time, so I didn't agree to it two years ago.
Over the past two years, you have shown
your wisdom and bravery in every battle.
Therefore, I promised you a few months ago
that I would let you lead the army to attack Zhang Bu.
In the battle against Zhang Bu, you were
hit in the thigh by an enemy arrow, but you did not flinch. You still stood at
the front and led the soldiers forward. Your actions showed your determination
and will to defeat the enemy.
Today, at this banquet, I would like to
publicly praise you. Because of your firm will, you have achieved what you set
out to do.
You deserve to be an example to us all.

歷史書上記載了一個他的故事。
西元23年，中國的新王朝滅亡之後，中國各地的軍閥仰仗著各自的軍事力量劃分出屬於各自的勢力範圍。
東漢王國的創立者的名字叫做(劉秀)，劉秀就是當時眾多軍閥之一。
這些軍閥彼此間發生了很多戰爭，這些軍閥都想要打敗其他軍閥並且統一整個中國。
西元29年，在耿弇的主動請求下，劉秀讓耿弇帶領軍隊去攻打位於現在山東省的一個軍力很強大的軍閥。這個軍閥的名字叫做張步。
耿弇贏了這場戰爭後，在慶功宴上，劉秀對他說。
兩年前你就曾經向我提出請求，說你要率領軍隊去攻打張步。
但是我當時認為我們的實力還不夠強大因此我兩年前沒有答應你。
這兩年中，你在每場戰役中都表現出你的智慧與勇敢。
因此我在幾個月前答應你讓你帶領軍隊攻打張步。
你在攻打張步的這一場戰役中，你被敵人的箭射中大腿你也不退縮，你仍舊站在最前線領導士兵們前進，你的行為展現出你要打敗敵人的決心與意志。
今天在這場辦慶功宴上，我要特別的公開讚美你，因為你有堅定的意志所以你完成了這件你想完成的事。
你值得作為我們所有人的榜樣。
