Judge my efforts based on my actions.(唯力是視)
At the end of the Eastern Han dynasty in
China, the king had no real power. Many warlords throughout China disregarded
the king's orders because they controlled the army. All power in the central
government was in the hands of a prominent minister named Cao Cao.
Cao Cao had two sons, Cao Pi and Cao Zhi,
and the three of them were all highly accomplished in literature.
Cao Cao enjoyed immense political prestige
and power. Among his subordinates was Ruan Yu, a very famous writer of the
time. History books tell a story about these two men.
One day, Cao Cao led his army to attack a
rebellious warlord. Before the army set off, Cao Cao suddenly said to Ruan Yu,
'Help me write an official letter to inform
everyone of the reasons behind our military campaign against this warlord. This
letter must clearly state that we are on the side of justice.'
When the army rested at noon that day, Ruan
Yu handed over the document he had written to Cao Cao.
After reading it, Cao Cao was astonished
and said to Ruan Yu,
'This document is so perfectly written, I
cannot find a single flaw.
I am amazed that you were able to conceive
such a perfect message in such a short time.'
Ruan Yu smiled and replied,
'Writing this document did not require much
effort. I completed it during a brief break while riding my horse.'
Thank you for your praise; I am very
honoured.'
Thanks to Cao Cao's appreciation, Ruan Yu
was able to serve in the central government of the Eastern Han dynasty and
utilise his talents.
Ruan Yu once wrote the following passage to
thank Cao Cao:
'I am a lucky person. I have had the
opportunity to dispel the clouds that obscured my life and look up at the
bright sun.
Please feel free to entrust me with any
tasks you require. I will do my utmost to complete all of your assignments. You
can evaluate my performance at any time; judge my efforts based on my actions.
This idiom translates as "judge my
efforts based on my actions".
