Historians divide the Han dynasty era in
China into the Western Han dynasty (202 BC – 8 AD) and the Eastern Han dynasty
(25 AD – 220 AD).
Between these two dynasties was the brief
Xin Dynasty (9–23 AD).
The first emperor of the Eastern Han
dynasty was Liu Xiu.
Following the collapse of the Xin Dynasty,
China was divided. After many battles, Liu Xiu's army finally unified the
entire country in 36 AD.
History records a story about Liu Xiu.
By 25 AD, he had already conquered parts of
China and declared the re-establishment of the Han Dynasty. To distinguish it
from the original Han Dynasty, which was founded by Liu Bang, historians refer
to the dynasty established by Liu Xiu as the Eastern Han Dynasty.
Liu Xiu was a highly skilled general and a
wise leader.
Even after successfully establishing the
Eastern Han dynasty, he did not become arrogant or conceited. He had a profound
insight into human nature: when we work hard to achieve a dream and finally
succeed, we tend to become lazy and complacent.
At a crucial meeting in 26 AD, Liu Xiu
addressed all the ministers of the central government:
'I have observed a universal human
tendency: when our dreams are realised, we become indulgent.
I have seen many people who, after
achieving their dreams, become excessively indulgent out of pride. They cross
the line in their indulgence, and their wrongdoings later lead to disaster and
punishment.
After establishing the Eastern Han Dynasty,
I rewarded you all appropriately with titles and positions based on your
military achievements and contributions. At this time, I want to remind you of
what I am about to say.'

This idiom literally translates as 'Growing
More Cautious Each Da'.

你們如果要讓你們的榮耀延續到你的後代，那麼你們就應該要保持一種如同在湍急的河邊行走或是在剛結成冰的湖面上行走一樣的感覺，你們在你們的行為與工作上要表現地一天比一天更加謹慎。
你們是我在建立東漢王朝的過程中最重要的夥伴，如果你們這樣做，如果你們這樣做，那麼我認為我們就能合作得非常長久。
