(Cannot be attained again.)

Cannot be attained again.(不可復得)
This blog was created to introduce Chinese
culture to international friends. For the sake of simplicity and ease of
understanding, traditional titles such as 'Emperor' and 'King' have been
simplified, and names are used directly wherever possible. This is for the
convenience of translation, not historical research. If you wish to consult
rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of
the article.
During the Southern Liang Kingdom of the
Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China, there was a famous poet named
Wang Ji.
In present-day Zhejiang Province, China,
there is a stream called Ruoye Stream. One day, Wang Ji spent an afternoon on
the stream in a boat and wrote a poem to express his feelings.
The poem is roughly as follows:
'I sat in a magnificent boat, gently
drifting on the stream,
The azure sky was reflected in the water
and I felt relaxed and carefree.
At dusk, beautiful sunset clouds covered
the distant mountain peaks,
The winding stream was filled with the glow
of the setting sun.
As the sun set, amidst the cicadas'
cacophony, the surrounding woods seemed even more silent.
In that moment before darkness fell, the
distant mountains seemed even more profound amidst the countless bird calls.
Looking at all this, I was suddenly
overcome with a longing for home. I had wandered for many years and my heart
was weary of this restlessness.
This poem spread rapidly after its
completion, becoming beloved and admired by many. Two kings of the Southern
Liang Kingdom greatly appreciated it; one of them praised it, saying:
'This poem is superb, especially the lines
contrasting the cicadas' chirping with the silent woods and birdsong with
distant mountains — these are the essence of the poem.' I believe Wang Ji's two
lines achieve a level of artistry that cannot be attained again."
The idiom translates directly as 'cannot be
attained again'.
