(Helping others to cook enables you to
sample the food yourself.)

Helping others to cook enables you to
sample the food yourself.(佐饔得嘗)
This blog was originally intended as an
introduction to Chinese culture for international readers. For the sake of
simplicity and ease of understanding, traditional titles such as 'Emperor' and
'King' have been simplified to 'King', and the names of the individuals in
question are used directly wherever possible. This is to make translation
easier, not to ensure historical accuracy. For rigorous historical research,
please refer to the sources appended at the end of the article.
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties
period in China, there was a famous minister and writer named Yan Zhitui.
He wrote a book in which he shared his life
experiences with his children. This book was widely loved and disseminated, and
many of its ideas still influence Chinese people today.
He wrote the following passage in this book:
'There is a classic ancient Chinese history
book called Guoyu (Discourses of the States). In this book, there is a very
wise saying:
Helping others to cook enables you to
sample the food yourself; helping others to fight may result in your own
involvement and harm.
This saying teaches us a simple yet
important truth.
When we see someone doing good deeds, we
should actively participate because, by doing so, we can share in their good
fortune. Conversely, when we see someone doing bad deeds, we should immediately
leave and not join in with those unjust acts.
We must always remember that we should
never do anything unjust that harms others.
Imagine we are walking down the street when
an injured bird flies into our arms. I believe that anyone with a compassionate
heart would pity the bird and care for it.
Now suppose someone suffers misfortune
because they acted in accordance with their inner sense of morality and
justice. If they ask for our help, we cannot refuse; we must do our best to
help.
I will now give a few examples from ancient
China to illustrate this point.
During the Spring and Autumn period, a
fisherman helped a minister escape from the kingdom after the minister's father
and brother were killed by the King of Chu.
In the early Han dynasty, two families, the
Zhou and the Zhu, helped a warrior named Ji Bu escape the Han king's pursuit.
Towards the end of the Han dynasty, Kong
Rong sheltered an honourable minister from the pursuit of a powerful eunuch and
was later arrested and imprisoned himself.
Also towards the end of the Han dynasty,
Sun Song helped a scholar escape persecution by hiding him for three years.
I believe the actions of these historical
figures are worthy of emulation. I would gladly do the same. If I had the opportunity
to help righteous people in need, I would be willing to sacrifice my life for
them.
The idiom literally translates to
"Helping others to cook enables you to sample the food yourself."
It describes someone who helps others do
good deeds and later receives a reward for their actions.
Dear friend, what inspired you or what were
your thoughts after hearing this story?
