A Game Played by a Half-Female Immortal(半仙戲)
During the late Yuan and early Ming
dynasties in China, a writer named Wang Ying collected and categorised many
anecdotes and stories from Chinese history, compiling them into a fascinating
collection.
This book recounts the origin of the swing
game.
During the Spring and Autumn period, the
Jin kingdom in northern China had a minister named Jie Zitui who was of high
moral character and noble virtue. After his death, to commemorate him, the
people of Jin observed that on the anniversary each year, no one lit fires to
cook and everyone ate cold food. This custom later evolved into a traditional
festival known as the Cold Food Festival. It later spread to other kingdoms in
China, becoming a festival celebrated throughout the country.
In ancient northern China, there was a
kingdom of nomadic peoples called the Shanrong.
The people of the Shanrong Kingdom invented
a game called swinging. They used it to train their bodies. Later, it spread to
the Qi Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn period, where it became popular. In
Qi, girls would hang colourful ropes from wooden frames to make swings. One
girl would sit or stand on the swing while the others pulled the ropes from
behind to make it swing. The game then spread from Qi to various other kingdoms
throughout China, where it became a popular pastime.
The Cold Food Festival and swinging were
later combined. During the festival, various swinging competitions were held
throughout China every day.
This custom continued for over a thousand
years until the Tang dynasty. The ninth emperor of the Tang dynasty was named
Li Longji.
When Li Longji first ascended the throne,
he managed the vast Tang Dynasty diligently. He humbly listened to the advice
of his loyal ministers, and the dynasty's power gradually reached its peak.
Later generations considered him to be a great king during this period.
However, after he had led the Tang Dynasty to become the most powerful empire
of his time, his mindset became relaxed. Believing that the dynasty would
continue to prosper, he began to indulge his desires by holding daily banquets
and drinking excessively. During this period, he was considered an incompetent
and decadent king.
In the later years of his reign, Li Longji
held an annual swing competition in the palace during the Cold Food Festival.
All the concubines and palace maids could participate, and a grand banquet was
held on that day.
One Cold Food Festival, as Li Longji looked
at the beautiful concubines playing on the swings, he said to the ministers
sitting around him, 'Beautiful female immortals live in heaven, beautiful women
live on earth, and these women playing on the swings are now somewhere between
heaven and earth. They should be considered half-Female-immortal.'
The game of swinging acquired this unique
name as a result.
