Wen Qiao, a famous minister from the Jin
dynasty in China, is recorded in history books alongside a story about him.
In 316 AD, the Former Han Kingdom, which
was established by nomadic people in northern China, captured the capital of
the Western Jin Dynasty. The Western Jin king was killed and the dynasty
collapsed, with much of northern China being occupied by the Former Han
Kingdom. Many of the Western Jin Dynasty's ministers and officials fled south
of the Yangtze River.
In 317 AD, a member of the Western Jin
royal family, with the help of several important ministers, proclaimed himself
king and founded the Eastern Jin dynasty. He then established Jiankang as the
capital.
Wen Qiao was born in 288 AD and died in 329
AD. He lived in a very chaotic era.
He was intelligent and agile. He was also a
man of great character: an avid reader, knowledgeable and a skilled writer. He
was dutiful to his parents, affectionate with his brothers, handsome, and
eloquent. Everyone in his hometown liked him.
Upon reaching adulthood, he witnessed the
collapse of the Western Jin dynasty. Seeing the turmoil in the country, he felt
a sense of responsibility to serve it and agreed to accept the government's
summons to work in the Western Jin Dynasty's central government system.
On the day he was due to leave, his mother
tugged at his clothes and said, 'The situation is very chaotic now. If you
leave home, I think your future will be full of danger. I hope you will stay
with us.'
Unable to refuse her pleas, he took out the
knife he always carried, cut his clothes and left resolutely.
After this departure, Wen Qiao never saw
his mother again. His hometown was occupied by the Former Han Kingdom. He fled
south of the Yangtze River with many ministers and officials of the Western Jin
dynasty.
Years later, his mother passed away. Upon
hearing the news, he was deeply saddened. He wanted to return secretly to the Former
Han Kingdom to bury her and petitioned the central government for permission,
but his request was refused.
His superiors held a meeting and made a
decision, telling him:
'If you return to your hometown, which is
occupied by the Former Han Kingdom, we believe that you will never be able to
return to land controlled by the Eastern Jin Kingdom. For the sake of our
nation's revival, please do not return to your hometown.' We will soon reclaim
the vast land north of the Yangtze River that originally belonged to us. Then
you can return to pay your respects to your mother.'
However, Wen Qiao never returned to his
hometown, carrying this regret in his heart until his death.
This idiom literally translates as "to
cut one's own clothes and leave resolutely".
It is used to describe someone leaving with
a very determined attitude.
