He used his immense power to bully the weak.(以強陵弱)

This blog was originally created to introduce Chinese culture to international friends. For the sake of simplicity and ease of understanding, official titles have been translated into their modern, commonly used names. This is for the sake of convenience in translation, not historical accuracy. If you wish to consult more rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of the article.

There was a famous official named Guo Shu in the Jin Dynasty of China, and his story is recorded in history books.

In 316 AD, the Western Jin dynasty was defeated by the army of the Former Zhao kingdom and its king was killed. The Western Jin Kingdom perished.

The following year, a member of the Western Jin royal family named Sima Rui established the Eastern Jin Dynasty in Jiankang City, Jiangsu Province, China.

This was mainly due to the support of a powerful family at the time: the Wang family.

Two leading figures emerged from this family: Wang Dao and his brother. He served as Chancellor of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, wielding supreme administrative power.

Another member of the Wang family was Wang Dun. He served as a general in the Eastern Jin dynasty and controlled the kingdom's largest military force.

Guo Shu was an important military advisor to Wang Dun.

One day, Miao Tan, an officer in Wang Dun's army, suggested occupying a piece of privately owned land for military camps. Wang Dun agreed.

This caused considerable controversy. An official named Le Kai told Wang Dun, 'This land belongs to some farmers; we should not occupy it illegally.'

Upon hearing this, Wang Dun became very angry and retorted, 'The Eastern Jin dynasty has been able to maintain peace primarily because of me and my army. Without my protection, would those farmers still possess it?

Upon hearing Wang Dun's words, Guo Shu directly addressed the angry general, saying, "I would like to express my opinion."

Wang Dun replied, "Are you crazy? Can't you see I'm very unhappy?'

Looking Wang Dun in the eye, Guo Shu said, 'In Chinese history, many upright people have been called crazy by their leaders. Haven't you noticed? What great leaders have there been in Chinese history? They are great because they are willing to listen to dissenting opinions and voices that differ from their own. Do you think you are greater than those ancient Chinese leaders?'

Now more composed, Wang Dun asked, "Then what is your opinion?"

Guo Shu smiled and replied, 'The main reason for this controversy lies with an officer named Miao Tan. He didn't think things through clearly. He didn't want to communicate with the people fairly and negotiate; he wanted to seize this land directly. Miao Tan used his immense power to bully the weak.

If this really happened, how would the people view you, General?'

Guo Shu paused, then continued, 'I want to make it clear that I oppose this because I want to maintain your good image in the eyes of the people.'

Having listened to Guo Shu, Wang Dun ordered that the land occupied be returned immediately to the original farmers.

This idiom translates directly as "He used his immense power to bully the weak.".

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts did you gain from this story?

Could you, as Wang Dun, calmly listen to Guo Shu's advice?

And if you were Guo Shu, would you have dared to express your opposition directly?

I hope this story provides you with some new insights.
