(He was a stubborn, willful, and unkind man.)

He was a stubborn, willful, and unkind man.
Wen Qiao was a renowned minister of the Jin
dynasty in China, and his story is chronicled in historical texts.
In 316 AD, the Former Han Kingdom, which
was founded by nomadic people in northern China, captured the capital of the
Western Jin Dynasty. The Western Jin king was killed and the dynasty collapsed,
with much of northern China being occupied by the Former Han Kingdom. Many of
the Western Jin Dynasty's ministers and officials fled south of the Yangtze
River.
In 317 AD, a member of the Western Jin
royal family, with the help of several influential ministers, proclaimed himself
king and founded the Eastern Jin dynasty. He then established Jiankang as the
capital.
The Jin dynasty comprised several prominent
families, the most powerful of which was the Wang family, who produced many
notable figures. Many officials in the Eastern Jin central government were
members of the Wang family, and this family wielded more power than the royal
family.
The second emperor of the Eastern Jin
dynasty was Sima Shao. During his reign, the most powerful member of the Wang
family was the general Wang Dun, who commanded the most powerful army in the
dynasty.
In 324 AD, Wang Dun led his army in a
rebellion. Shortly afterwards, he fell suddenly ill and died. Without a leader,
his army immediately surrendered and the rebellion quickly ended.
Sima Shao prepared to issue an order to
arrest all of Wang Dun's officers and military advisers, intending to severely
punish them.
Upon hearing this news, Wen Qiao said to
Sima Shao,
'I once served as Wang Dun's military
advisor. I know many of his men, and I am good friends with many of them. I
would like to offer some suggestions, which I hope you will consider.
"Wang Dun was a stubborn, wilful and
unkind man. He was extremely cruel and treated his subordinates with great
brutality. He delighted in flattery and disliked honest advice. Neither the
central government nor his family could control him or persuade him to change
his ways.
Because of his volatile temper, his
officers and staff were afraid to express their opinions or discuss matters
within the army. His officers lived in constant fear.
They had no choice but to endure their fate
and were unable to leave Wang Dun's army voluntarily.
Based on these observations, I believe we
should handle each of Wang Dun's officers and staff on a case-by-case basis.
Those who were forced into the rebellion should be forgiven, while those who
actively participated should be severely punished.
Sima Shao was a good king who was willing
to accept good advice. After careful consideration, he decided to adopt Wen Qiao's
suggestion.
The literal translation of this idiom is
that he was stubborn, wilful and unkind.
It is used to describe a person who is
stubborn, wilful and unkind.
