(His family had no spare money.)

His family had no spare money.

This blog was originally created to introduce Chinese culture to international friends. For the sake of simplicity and ease of understanding, traditional titles such as 'emperor' and 'king' have been simplified to 'king', and the names have been used as directly as possible. This is for the convenience of translation, not historical research. If you wish to consult rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of the article.

There was a famous minister in the Song dynasty of China named Chen Mi, and his story is recorded in history books.

In 1127 AD, the army of the Jin Kingdom invaded the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty. The two Northern Song kings were captured and taken to the Jin Kingdom, resulting in the collapse of the Northern Song Dynasty.

Also in 1127, a member of the Northern Song royal family named Zhao Gou, along with some ministers and nobles who had fled to southern China, declared the re-establishment of the Song Dynasty in present-day Nanjing. Historians refer to this period as the Southern Song Dynasty.

Chen Mi was born in 1171. Throughout his life, he witnessed the weak Southern Song Dynasty being bullied by the Jin Kingdom in the north, which filled him with indignation.

He had a close friend named Ding Yu who was appointed ambassador to the Jin Kingdom. Before Ding Yu left for his post, Chen Mi had a meal with him.

During the meal, Chen Mi sighed and said,

'The Jin Kingdom harbours deep hatred for us. We can't even avenge their attacks, so why should we befriend them?'

After the meal, Chen Mi became emotional and said to Ding Yu,

'It's been almost a hundred years since the Northern Song Dynasty fell. Has China truly lost all its capable people?"

Throughout Chinese history, many capable and ambitious individuals have emerged. I believe that, with confidence and effort, we will become strong again and regain our former glory.

Chen Mi's friends know that he greatly admired three historical figures and regarded them as his role models.

The first is Yan Zhenqing of the Tang dynasty. Yan Zhenqing was loyal to his country and had a strong character. During a period of great turmoil, he bravely fought against rebels and ultimately died in battle.

The second was Tao Qian of the Jin Dynasty. Unable to tolerate the hypocrisy and sycophancy of the political arena at the time, he left politics and returned home, believing that character and spiritual freedom were far more important than money and status.

The third was Zhuge Liang of the Shu Han Kingdom. He was an extremely incorruptible, wise and loyal prime minister. His family had no spare money and no extra cloth.

This idiom translates directly as "His family had no spare money."

It is used to describe someone who is extremely honest and incorruptible.

It is also used to describe someone who lives a very simple life.

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts did you gain from this story?

Who is your role model in life? Do you think spiritual freedom or money is more important?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.
