His personal cultivation reached the level of a sage, and his actions demonstrated his ability to lead others with benevolence and righteousness.(內聖外王)

This blog was originally created to introduce Chinese culture to international friends. For the sake of simplicity and ease of understanding, official titles have been translated into their commonly used names. This is for the sake of translation convenience, not historical accuracy. If you wish to consult more rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of the article.

During the Song dynasty in China, there was a famous scholar named Shao Yong (1012–1077 AD). History books tell a story about him.

Around the age of 30, he moved with his parents to Luoyang, an ancient city with a rich historical heritage and many virtuous and learned inhabitants.

During the Song dynasty, there was a renowned and upright minister named Sima Guang. Sima Guang was seven years younger than Shao Yong and held him in deep respect; their relationship was as close as brothers'.

Many scholars and intellectuals from all over China visited Shao Yong when they came to Luoyang. He treated these visitors equally, showing no favouritism based on age or social status.

Shao Yong was a very modest person. During conversations, he did not deliberately draw attention to his own achievements, preferring to praise the strengths of others rather than mention their weaknesses.

He was open-minded and could discuss any topic. If someone wanted to discuss academic matters with him, he would share his research findings. However, he wouldn't flaunt his extensive knowledge, nor would he eagerly offer his opinions or try to persuade others to agree with his views, as some clever people do.

Because of these qualities, his home was often filled with visitors. People chatted happily in his house and everyone loved gathering there.

Cheng Hao, a prominent Confucian scholar who was 20 years younger than Shao Yong, recalled his first meeting with him. They talked all day, and when Cheng Hao returned home that evening, he was deeply moved. He later told his friends about the feelings evoked in him by Shao Yong, saying:

'His personal cultivation had reached the level of a sage, and his actions demonstrated his ability to lead others with benevolence and righteousness.'

The idiom literally translates as follows: 'His personal cultivation reached the level of a sage, and his actions demonstrated his ability to lead others with benevolence and righteousness.'

It is used to describe a state where both inner cultivation and outward behaviour are at their best.

Dear friend, what are your feelings or thoughts after hearing this story?

Who do you enjoy conversing with? Have you learned anything from Shao Yong's story about interacting and conversing with others?

I hope this story has given you some new insights.
