Refined pure gold and jade of the finest
quality(精金美玉)
During the Song dynasty in China, there was
a famous scholar named Wu Jiong. He wrote a book recording anecdotes from his
era and Chinese history. One passage from this book is as follows:
The Tang dynasty of China had three famous
poets: Li Bai, Bai Juyi and Li He.
The Tang people highly praised the talent
and works of these three individuals. They used the following words to describe
the differences in their poetry:
Compared to all the gods in the celestial
realm, Li Bai's talent is undoubtedly the greatest.
His works possess an ethereal quality and
his talent is beyond the reach of mortals.
In contrast, Bai Juyi's talent was
considered the greatest among humans.
Bai Juyi's works have a down-to-earth
quality, and his talent has reached the pinnacle of human achievement.
Compared to all the ghosts in the
underworld, Li He's talent is undoubtedly the greatest.
His works possess a ghostly quality, and
his talent is beyond the comprehension of mortals.
In the Tang Dynasty's central government,
there was a minister named Li Deyu. Li Deyu and Bai Juyi disagreed on many
issues and, on several occasions, argued without reaching a consensus. To
clarify his views and stance, Bai Juyi wrote letters to Li Deyu.
However, after receiving them, Li Deyu did
not open them, but kept them in a box instead.
His wife found this strange and asked him,
"Why don't you open these letters?"
Li Deyu smiled awkwardly and replied, 'Bai
Juyi's writing is too good. His arguments are very persuasive. I choose not to
read them because I fear they will change my original stance."
Having read this account, Wu Jiong recorded
his thoughts in this book.
Wu Jiong said, 'Su Shi, the greatest writer
of our time, once said that a good article is like pure, refined gold and the
finest jade.' The value of something rare and precious is not affected by
personal preference — its price cannot be manipulated. I think this passage is
a fitting commentary on the story.
