(Branches are proud and unyielding,
able to endure cold and harsh environments.)
荷花已經全部凋謝,原本池塘中那片像是一把把遮雨的小傘的荷葉也都枯乾了;

Branches are proud and unyielding, able to
endure cold and harsh environments.(傲霜枝)
Su Shi was a renowned politician, gourmet
and writer of the Song dynasty in China, as well as an accomplished
calligrapher. He is also one of the most beloved poets in Chinese history.
He was once transferred to serve as mayor
of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, where he met Liu Jingwen, a military officer
who also worked in the municipal government of Hangzhou.
Despite being a soldier, Liu Jingwen was
well-read and knowledgeable. He was simple and straightforward, and Su Shi
quickly became his friend. The two often drank and chatted together. One
autumn, Su Shi wrote a poem for Liu Jingwen, the gist of which is as follows:
The lotus flowers have all withered and the
leaves that once sheltered the pond like small umbrellas from the rain have
dried up. The chrysanthemums that were once in bloom have passed their season,
leaving only a few branches that are proud and unyielding, able to endure cold
and harsh environments.
My dear friend, please remember the best
times we spent together, the most beautiful scenery we saw, and the season when
the oranges on the trees gradually turned yellow while the tangerines remained
green.
This idiom translates as 'Branches are
proud and unyielding, able to endure cold and harsh environments'.
It is used to describe a person with a
steadfast and unyielding character who perseveres in difficult situations.
Dear friend, what thoughts or inspiration
did you have after hearing this story?
