(He led a small army against a much
larger one and defeated it.)

He led a small army against a much larger
one and defeated it.(以寡敵眾)
This blog was originally created to
introduce Chinese culture to an international audience. For the sake of
simplicity and ease of understanding, traditional titles such as 'Sima' have
been replaced with 'General', and names have been used as literally as
possible. This is for the convenience of translation, not for the sake of
historical accuracy. If you wish to consult rigorous historical sources, please
refer to the bibliographical references at the end of the article.
Following the end of the Jin dynasty, China
descended into a prolonged period of chaos known to historians as the Northern
and Southern Dynasties period.
From 439 to 581 AD, five dynasties rose and
fell in northern China. These five dynasties, in order, were the Northern Wei,
Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, and Northern Zhou.
From 420 to 589 AD, four dynasties rose and
fell in southern China. These four dynasties, in order, are the Liu Song,
Southern Qi, Southern Liang and Southern Chen.
It was an era of extreme chaos and unrest,
characterised by frequent wars. Many brave and skilled generals emerged during
this time, and their deeds are recorded in history books. One such general was
Dugu Yongye (?AD- 580 AD).
Dugu Yongye's original surname was not
Dugu. His biological father died when he was young and his mother remarried a
man named Dugu, so he took his stepfather's surname.
After growing up, he joined the army. Due
to his unique personal views, he was admired by his superiors after conversations,
and he quickly rose to an important position. After entering the central
government of the Northern Qi Kingdom, his performance was valued by the king
of the Northern Qi Dynasty.
From 559 AD onwards, he was frequently
dispatched to various parts of the Northern Qi Dynasty due to frequent border
wars with the Northern Zhou Kingdom. He was appointed to oversee border
management and security.
In 564 AD, the Northern Zhou Dynasty
dispatched a large army to attack Jinyong City, a key border stronghold of the
Northern Qi Dynasty.
The Northern Zhou army built earthen mounds
and dug tunnels, attacking the city day and night for 30 consecutive days.
Dugu Yongye led his soldiers in holding out
until the very last moment. The crisis was only averted when reinforcements
from the Northern Qi Dynasty arrived.
As well as being a military leader, he was
also an excellent administrator. During his administration of the border city,
security and order were maintained, attracting Northern Zhou citizens seeking a
peaceful life to take refuge there.
He trained a special army of just 200 men
who were under his direct command. Each member of this army was exceptionally
brave and skilled in combat, much like a modern special forces unit.
He led this small army against much larger
armies in many battles and defeated them.
Thanks to him, a considerable period of
stability was maintained on the border between the Northern Zhou and Northern
Qi dynasties.
The idiom literally translates as follows:
'He led a small army against a much larger one and defeated it.'
It is now used to describe someone who can
use a small force to fight against a large enemy.
