One such figure was Feng Menglong (1574–1646 AD), a famous novelist and playwright from the Ming dynasty who wrote many collections of short stories.

He once wrote a story featuring Su Shi (1037–1101 AD), a famous figure from the Northern Song dynasty.

Su Shi was a renowned writer, poet and minister of the Song dynasty. According to Feng Menglong's novel, he offended a prime minister named Wang Anshi and was consequently transferred to Huzhou in Zhejiang Province, far from the political centre.

Three years passed quickly and Su Shi's term in Huzhou came to an end. He returned to the capital to await a new assignment.

During this time, Su Shi reflected on why he had been transferred so far from the capital. He knew he had brought this misfortune upon himself.

Therefore, upon returning to the capital, he made a decision: he would proactively seek out Wang Anshi first. He wanted to apologise for his previous offence, ask for forgiveness and hope that Wang Anshi would arrange a better position for him.

The day after he arrived, Su Shi went to Wang Anshi's home with a servant.

There, he met Xu Lun, a young man and an important confidant of Wang Anshi's who had managed his study for many years.

Before they fell out, Su Shi and Wang Anshi were on good terms. Three years earlier, before Su Shi left the capital, he frequently visited Wang Anshi's home. It was during this time that he met Xu Lun.

Xu Lun was not yet 18 years old at the time. He was employed to assist Wang Anshi in organising his study and helping with his writing.

Su Shi was a man of refined manners, exceptional talent,, and learning. He amiable nature. He did not look down on others because of his higher status, and thus he had established a good relationship with Xu Lun three years earlier.

When Su Shi saw Xu Lun, he took the initiative to greet him.

Xu Lun was initially surprised to see Su Shi. When he recognised him, he happily and warmly took his hand, saying, 'You shouldn't be waiting here with these people. You are an old friend of Wang Anshi's. I will take you to his study to wait.'

Xu Lun led Su Shi to Wang Anshi's study and instructed a servant to prepare some tea. "I have work to do, so I must leave now," he told Su Shi. You know your way around here; would you mind waiting here for Wang Anshi?"

Su Shi nodded and agreed. After Xu Lun left, Su Shi sat alone in Wang Anshi's study, looking around to see if anything had changed in the last three years.

This idiom translates as "a man of refined manners, exceptional talent,, and learning".

It is used to describe a man of exceptional character and talent.
