Feng Menglong (1574–1646 AD) was a famous novelist and playwright in the Ming dynasty of China who wrote many collections of short stories.

He once wrote a fictional story featuring Su Shi (1037–1101 AD), a very famous figure from the Northern Song dynasty.

Su Shi was a renowned Song Dynasty minister, as well as a celebrated writer and poet. In Feng Menglong's novel, Su Shi offends a prime minister named Wang Anshi and is consequently transferred to Huzhou in Zhejiang Province, far from the political center.

Three years later, Su Shi's term in Huzhou ended and he returned to the capital to await a new assignment.

However, upon returning to the capital, Su Shi offended Wang Anshi again. Wang Anshi used his power to transfer Su Shi to Huangzhou in Hubei Province, a position with no real authority. Huangzhou was a very underdeveloped city at the time.

A few days after the personnel order was issued, Su Shi arrived in Huangzhou with his family to take up his post.

As his position lacked real power, his salary was very modest. However, Su Shi was an optimistic and cheerful person who quickly made many friends in Huangzhou.

One of these people later became his close friend: Chen Jichang, a man from Sichuan like himself.

As Su Shi's job was easy, he spent almost every day with Chen Jichang. They went hiking and trekking together, drank and ate together, wrote poetry and discussed all sorts of matters, big and small.

About a year after Su Shi arrived in Huangzhou, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, he slept in. When he got up, he said to himself, 'A strong wind blew last night, and the autumn temperature is so cool; it's perfect for sleeping. I don't have any plans today, so I'll go to my study and read.'

Su Shi sat in his study and read for a while. Around noon, he stood up and stretched.

He suddenly remembered that today was the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. According to ancient Chinese tradition, this day was for appreciating chrysanthemums and drinking wine infused with them. It was also a day for hiking.

'It's too late to climb the mountain today,' he thought to himself, 'but I have many chrysanthemums in my garden. A monk friend gave them to me. I'll go and tend to my garden and admire them today.'

Just then, Chen Jichang arrived. He entered Su Shi's house and Su Shi happily took his hand, saying, 'I was just about to go to my garden to admire the chrysanthemums. Let's go together.'

As Su Shi led Chen Jichang happily to his garden, he saw the chrysanthemums that had been blooming so profusely just two days ago. Suddenly, his eyes widened and his mouth gaped open. He appeared stunned.

Startled by Su Shi's unusual reaction, Chen Jichang asked, "What's wrong?" He nervously grabbed Su Shi's hand and asked, "What's wrong? Why do you look so frightened?'

This idiom translates literally as "His eyes widened and his mouth gaped open. He appeared stunned".

It is used to describe someone who is extremely shocked.

Dear friend, what insights or thoughts did you gain from this story?
