(I brought this misfortune upon myself.)

I brought this misfortune upon myself.(自取其咎)

The purpose of this blog is to introduce Chinese culture to international friends. For the sake of simplicity and ease of understanding, official titles have been translated into their modern, commonly used names. This is for the sake of translation, not historical research. One such figure was Feng Menglong (1574–1646 AD), a famous novelist and playwright from the Ming dynasty who wrote many collections of short stories.

He once wrote a fictional story featuring Su Shi (1037–1101 AD), a very famous figure from the Northern Song dynasty.

Su Shi was a renowned minister, writer and poet of the Song Dynasty. In Feng Menglong's story, Su Shi offended a prime minister named Wang Anshi and was transferred to a powerless position in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province as a result. Three years passed quickly. Su Shi's term in Huzhou came to an end and he returned to the capital to await a new assignment.

During this time, Su Shi reflected on why he had been transferred to such a remote location. He knew he had brought this misfortune upon himself.

Therefore, upon returning to the capital, he made a decision. He would first seek out Wang Anshi. He wanted to apologise for unintentionally offending him, ask for forgiveness and express his hope that Wang Anshi would help him find a good position.

The day after he arrived in the capital, Su Shi went to Wang Anshi's home with a servant.

As Wang Anshi was prime minister, holding a high position and wielding great power, his front hall was filled with officials early in the morning. Most of these officials, like Su Shi, wanted to see Wang Anshi privately and seek his assistance.

A servant from Wang Anshi's household informed Su Shi that Wang Anshi was still asleep, so Su Shi sat down with the officials in the front hall to chat and drink tea.

About ten minutes later, Su Shi saw a young man emerge from Wang Anshi's inner hall. He appeared to be about 20 years old and was wearing a large hat and a green robe. As he appeared, all the officials in the front hall stood up to greet him.

Su Shi was curious and quickly inquired about the young man's identity. It transpired that the young man's name was Xu Lun, an important confidant who managed Wang Anshi's study.

The idiom translates as "I brought this misfortune upon myself".

It is used to describe someone who brings disaster or punishment upon themselves due to their own faults or mistakes.
