(We must stand by our righteous actions; we cannot turn back now.)

(We must stand by our righteous actions; we cannot turn back now.)

We must stand by our righteous actions; we cannot turn back now.(義無旋踵)

The famous Jin Dynasty minister Wen Qiao (288–329 AD) is recorded in history books alongside a story about him.

In 327 AD, two generals who commanded armies within the local government joined forces to launch a rebellion. One general was named Su Jun and the other Zu Yue.

This rebel army was very powerful. In 328 AD, they captured the capital, Jiankang, and burned down the imperial palace. Su Jun and Zu Yue did not kill the eight-year-old third king of the Eastern Jin dynasty, but seized control of the central government.

In an attempt to defeat the rebels and rescue the king, Wen Qiao successfully assembled a united army of more than ten generals. Although he led the allied army, he did not serve as its commander-in-chief. Instead, he recommended Tao Kan, a general whose military strength and personal prestige surpassed his own.

After Tao Kan's army reached the vicinity of the Eastern Jin capital, they established two important military outposts under Wen Qiao's leadership.

However, after establishing these outposts, Wen Qiao's army engaged in several small-scale battles with the rebel forces led by Su Jun and Zu Yue over the following weeks. The allied army lost all of these battles and, given their large numbers, their food supplies could not keep up, leading to a food shortage crisis within weeks.

Upon seeing this situation, Commander-in-Chief Tao Kan immediately convened an emergency military meeting. At the meeting, he told Wen Qiao:

'Winning this war is not as simple as you said it would be. You said we could easily defeat the rebels, but we have lost the last few battles. The enemy is far stronger than we imagined. I believe we should retreat now to readjust our food supply and troop numbers.

Having heard Tao Kan's opinion, Wen Qiao voiced his objection.

'I disagree with your view. Please allow me to express my own view.

Although we have suffered defeats in recent battles, our army remains extremely united. Why is this? I believe it's because we are fighting for justice.

Our king is currently under house arrest. If we fail to defeat the rebels, our country will perish. Everyone in our army is willing to sacrifice their life for our country.

According to my intelligence, Su Jun and Zu Yue became arrogant and overconfident after successfully occupying the capital. They believed they could defeat us, but they failed to realise that, because of their brutal actions, the entire nation was on our side, not theirs.

We must stand by our righteous actions; we cannot turn back now.

I believe that as long as we persevere, we will defeat this rebel army. This belief is not unique to me: all the soldiers and officers in our army share it. We also believe that, once we have defeated the rebels, we will all receive generous rewards from the king.

If you order us to retreat now, I believe that I and all our officers and soldiers will object.

Having listened to Wen Qiao, Tao Kan could find no reason to refute his words and accepted his advice.

Several months later, just as Wen Qiao had predicted, the united army, highly motivated, defeated the rebels and achieved final victory.

This idiom means that We must stand by our righteous actions; we cannot turn back now.

It is used to describe someone who does not back down for the sake of justice.
