A person whose talent and knowledge are both extremely limited and shallow.(才疏識淺)

This blog was originally created to introduce Chinese culture to international friends. For the sake of simplicity and ease of understanding, official titles have been translated into their commonly used names. This is for the convenience of translation, not historical research. If you wish to consult rigorous historical materials, please refer to the sources listed at the end of the article.

Feng Menglong (1574–1646 AD) was a famous novelist and playwright from the Ming dynasty in China who wrote many collections of short stories.

He once wrote a fictional story featuring Su Shi (1037–1101 AD), a very famous figure from the Northern Song dynasty.

Su Shi was a renowned Song Dynasty minister, as well as a celebrated writer and poet. In Feng Menglong's novel, Su Shi is reassigned to Huzhou in Zhejiang Province and Huangzhou in Hubei Province after offending the prime minister Wang Anshi twice.

More than a year after arriving in Huangzhou, Su Shi had the opportunity to return to the capital on official business before the winter solstice. However, before he left, he suddenly remembered a promise he had made to collect a jug of water from a 300-kilometre-long canyon in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and take it to Wang Anshi.

Su Shi devoted considerable time and effort to fulfilling his promise, finally reaching the canyon and fetching the water.

He arrived in the capital before the winter solstice as planned. After completing his official duties, he took the jug of water to Wang Anshi's home.

Upon hearing of Su Shi's visit, Wang Anshi told his servant, "I will go to my study to tidy up. Please bring Su Shi to my study in about 15 minutes.'

When Wang Anshi arrived at the study, he saw the piece of paper on which Su Shi had written the offensive poem from the previous year. It was stuck to a pillar. He smiled at it, but didn't remove it. After tidying the room slightly, Wang Anshi sat down to wait for Su Shi.

Before entering the study, Su Shi felt ashamed and nervous. He was ashamed because it was in this very study last year that he had offended Wang Anshi, and he was nervous because today he was going to apologise to Wang Anshi and didn't know if he would be forgiven.

After entering the study, Su Shi sat in the chair next to Wang Anshi. After a servant brought tea, the two began to talk.

Wang Anshi smiled and pointed to the paper stuck to the pillar. "Last year, you came to my study and presumptuously added two lines to my unfinished poem," Time flies; a year has passed in the blink of an eye.

Following Wang Anshi's gaze, Su Shi saw the paper on the pillar. Upon hearing Wang Anshi's words, he immediately stood up, his voice trembling with respect as he said,

'Please forgive me. I know I made a mistake.'

Wang Anshi smiled at Su Shi and said,

I know you have never been to Huangzhou City, so even though you have offended me, I don't blame you.

Su Shi didn't dare look up at Wang Anshi, answering softly.

Yes.

In a very gentle tone, Wang Anshi said to Su Shi,

'I know you have never been to Huangzhou City. Although you have offended me, I do not blame you.'

Upon hearing these words, Su Shi realised that Wang Anshi had forgiven him. He raised his head and said gratefully to Wang Anshi,

'I am a person whose talent and knowledge are both extremely limited and shallow. I am very grateful for your tolerance.

This idiom translates as 'a person whose talent and knowledge are both extremely limited and shallow'.
