The mood shifted from anger to joy.(由嗔作喜)

During the Ming dynasty in China, there was a famous novelist and playwright named Feng Menglong (1574–1646 AD) who wrote many collections of short stories.

He once wrote a fictional story featuring Su Shi (1037–1101 AD), a very famous figure from the Northern Song dynasty.

Su Shi was a renowned minister, writer and poet of the Song Dynasty. In Feng Menglong's novel, Su Shi offends a prime minister named Wang Anshi, resulting in his transfer to Huzhou in Zhejiang Province, far from the political centre.

Three years later, Su inadvertently offended Wang again and was transferred to Huangzhou in Hubei Province, where he was given a powerless position. Huangzhou was a very underdeveloped city at the time.

A few days after the appointment was issued, Su Shi and his family arrived in Huangzhou to take up his post.

About a year after arriving, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Su Shi suddenly realised his ignorance after seeing all the chrysanthemum petals in his garden fall overnight. He finally understood the real reason why Wang Anshi had transferred him to Huangzhou.

The following day, when Su Shi met with the mayor of Huangzhou, he mentioned this incident. After hearing his story, the mayor smiled and said...

'Like you, I only learned after arriving in this city that chrysanthemum petals can fall off all at once. I was quite shocked when I saw it.'

Having heard your description, I believe that our Prime Minister is indeed very knowledgeable. He knows things that most people don't. Furthermore, I think that the fact that he deliberately transferred you to this place shows that he wanted you to discover your ignorance.

When you return to the capital, I think you should visit him again and apologise to him sincerely. I believe he will forgive your unintentional offence and his mood shifted from anger to joy.

Su Shi nodded in agreement after hearing the mayor's words. Su Shi continued,

'But I don't know when I'll have the opportunity to return to the capital. It seems I won't see the Prime Minister again for many years.'

After hearing Su Shi's words, the mayor thought for a moment and then said to him,

'The winter solstice is coming soon, and it's a very important festival.

As is customary, I need to write an official letter to the capital, explaining the current management situation in our area and offering congratulations. I will have an official from the municipal government deliver this letter personally back to the capital.

Your writing is excellent. If you'd like, could you help me think about the content of this letter? Once I have finished writing it, you will be responsible for delivering it to the capital. You can then visit our Prime Minister on your way.'

Su Shi nodded happily in agreement after hearing the mayor's words.

This idiom translates literally as 'The mood shifted from anger to joy'.

It is used to describe a person's mood changing from anger to joy.

Dear friend, what inspiration or thoughts did you gain from this story?

Have you ever proactively apologised to someone for a mistake you made? Have you ever encountered someone who never admits their mistakes or apologises?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.
