The overlapping mountains resemble a vast natural screen.(重巒疊嶂)

Feng Menglong (1574–1646 AD) was a famous novelist and playwright in the Ming dynasty of China who wrote many collections of short stories.

He once wrote a fictional story featuring Su Shi (1037–1101 AD), a very famous figure from the Northern Song dynasty.

Su Shi was a renowned minister, writer and poet of the Song Dynasty. In Feng Menglong's novel, Su Shi offends a prime minister named Wang Anshi, resulting in his transfer to Huzhou in Zhejiang Province, far from the political centre.

Three years later, Su inadvertently offended Wang again and was transferred to Huangzhou in Hubei Province, where he was given a powerless position. Huangzhou was a very underdeveloped city at the time.

A few days after the appointment was issued, Su Shi and his family travelled to Huangzhou to take up his post.

About a year after arriving in Huangzhou, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Su Shi suddenly realised his ignorance after seeing all the chrysanthemum petals in his garden fall to the ground overnight. He understood the real reason why Wang Anshi had transferred him to Huangzhou.

He wanted to return to the capital to express his sincere apology to Wang Anshi in person. However, he then remembered something.

He recalled that Wang Anshi had asked him for a favour before he left the capital, which he had granted.

Wang Anshi asked Su Shi to collect a jug of water from a gorge in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and take it back to the capital.

This particular gorge was not what most people would imagine; it was famous and dangerous.

The Yangtze River in China is 6,300 kilometres long, and the gorge that Wang Anshi mentioned was around 300 kilometres long. It begins in what is now Chongqing.

This section of the gorge is so long that it has been divided into three based on geographical location: the first is Qutang Gorge, the second is Wu Gorge and the third is Gui Gorge.

The river in this section is extremely fast-flowing, so boats entering the gorge travel at high speed.

After entering the canyon, towering mountain walls stretch for 300 kilometres on both sides, with only a few places to stop. Traveling downstream on the Yangtze River, you can see the overlapping mountains resemble a vast natural screen. – a truly magnificent sight.

Because the canyon is so deep and the mountainsides are covered in trees, it feels like a cloudy day even at midday. The wind in the canyon is also unique, and only experienced captains can navigate it safely.

The idiom translates literally as 'The overlapping mountains resemble a vast natural screen'.

It is used to describe the feeling of mountains stretching endlessly into the distance.

Dear friend, what inspired you or what thoughts did you have after hearing this story?

Have you ever visited a canyon? What is the most spectacular natural scenery you have ever seen?

I hope this story gives you some new insights.
